ATP Rankings: The 5 men to hit 12,000 points – as Jannik Sinner emulates tennis greats
Jannik Sinner has hit plenty of tennis milestones in recent months, and his Wimbledon triumph cements his position as the world No 1.
Sunday’s four-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz saw him snap a five-match losing run versus the Spaniard, and means he is now the reigning champion at three of the four Grand Slam tournaments.
However, his Wimbledon triumph has also seen him hit an impressive milestone in the ATP Rankings.
The Italian is now just the fifth man since 1990 to hold 12,000+ ranking points at any one time, and he joins esteemed company.
Here, we look at the peak ranking points achieved in this very exclusive club.
Jannik Sinner – 12,030 (2025)
Sinner held 10,430 points coming into Wimbledon, though his SW19 success has pushed him up to 12,030 points in the ATP Rankings.
Grand Slam success is the key to the Italian’s rankings dominance, with 2,000 points each from his US Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon triumphs over the past twelve months.
The Italian also earned 1,300 points for his French Open runner-up finish, while he is the reigning ATP Finals, Cincinnati Open, and Shanghai Masters champion.
Sinner’s milestone comes despite the fact that he missed four Masters 1000 events during his three-month doping suspension earlier in 2025.
Andy Murray – 12,685 (2016)
After years of being denied by the ‘Big 3’, Murray soared to world No 1 for the first time towards the end of 2016, with the Brit holding a peak 12,685 points on November 21st that year.
The highlight of Murray’s rise was his second Wimbledon triumph that summer, though he had runner-up finishes at the Australian Open and the French Open also on his record.
The Brit won a total of nine titles from 17 tournaments across the season, including Masters 1000 triumphs in Rome, Shanghai, and Paris, alongside runner-up finishes in Madrid and Cincinnati.
Murray won his final five tournaments of the season, culminating in an ATP Finals triumph which pushed him above the 12,000-point mark.
Rafael Nadal – 15,390 (2009)
Nadal had plenty of periods of dominance across his career, though his rankings peak came on April 20, 2009, when he held a staggering 15,390 ranking points.
The Spaniard’s ranking was boosted by holding three of the four Grand Slam titles at the point, winning a fourth straight French Open title in June 2008, before maiden wins at Wimbledon in 2008 and at the 2009 Australian Open.
Nadal had also reached the semi-final of the 2008 US Open and was the reigning champion at the Hamburg Masters, Canadian Open, and Indian Wells Open at the time.
His successful title defence at the Monte Carlo Masters the week before the ATP Rankings update helped the ‘King of Clay’ seal his peak points tally.

Roger Federer – 15,903 (2006)
Tennis legend Federer was at the peak of his powers in the mid 2000s, and held a staggering 15,903 points on November 20, 2006 – the end of one of his most successful seasons.
The Swiss amassed a staggering 27-1 win-loss record at the majors that year, claiming significant points for his Australian Open, Wimbledon, and US Open wins, alongside finishing as the French Open runner-up.
Federer won 12 titles across 2006, including four Masters titles in Indian Wells, Miami, Canada, and Madrid, and reached a further four finals, only failing to reach the final at one of 17 events.
His run to the ATP Finals title at the end of 2006 cemented one of the most dominant seasons of his career, and sealed his record ranking points tally.
Novak Djokovic – 16,950 (2016)
Djokovic holds countless tennis records, and his astonishing tally of 16,950 ranking points achieved on June 6, 2016, remains one of his most impressive.
The Serbian had just lifted his first French Open title at that point, making him the reigning champion at all four Grand Slam tournaments.
Outside of the majors, Djokovic had won Masters 1000 titles in Indian Wells, Miami, and Madrid by this stage of the 2016 season, and was still the reigning Shanghai Masters, Paris Masters, and ATP Finals champion.
With the Qatar Open title and Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open, and Italian Open runner-up finishes to his name across the previous 12 months, Djokovic sealed a slice of ATP Rankings history.
