Wimbledon: 6 times players met in consecutive men’s singles finals – ahead of Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic rematch

Roger Federef and Rafael Nadal are among the players to meet in consecutive men's singles finals.

Once again, it is Carlos Alcaraz versus Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon.

Twelve months ago the two delivered an unforgettable final on Centre Court, and they will again face off in 2024.

This is not unprecedented at the All England Club, as six times previously in the Open Era the two same players have met in back-to-back Wimbledon men’s finals.

Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors: 1977 and 1978

Two of the biggest stars of the 1970s and early 1980s, Borg and Connors combined for seven singles titles at the All England Club.

And they met in the final twice, in 1977 and then again the following year.

The Swedish star prevailed in five sets for his second title in 1977 and then eased past the American in straight sets the following summer.

Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe: 1980 and 1981

Borg and McEnroe produced one of the most famous rivalries in ATP history, largely centred around Wimbledon.

In 1980, Borg won his fifth and final SW19 title in an epic five-setter against the American, in one of the most iconic matches in tennis history.

But a year later McEnroe turned the tables, picking up the first of his three singles titles at the grass-court Slam.

Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg: 1988-90

Two serve-and-volley greats, Becker and Edberg are just one of two sets of players to meet in three straight men’s singles finals at the tournament.

Following in the footsteps of fellow Swede Borg, Edberg won the first of the finals in 1988 in four sets, before Becker claimed his third Wimbledon title in 1989.

Their most memorable final was the final part of the trilogy in 1990, which Edberg won in five sets to claim his second and last victory at the All England Club.

Roger Federer and Andy Roddick: 2004 and 2005

Federer and Roddick’s most famous final on Centre Court came in 2009, but they had met twice in the Wimbledon final previously.

Eight-time champion Federer won both those matches, in four sets in 2004 and in straight sets the following Championships.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal: 2006-08

Federer and Nadal emulated Becker and Edberg by playing three consecutive finals across the mid-2000s.

The Swiss maestro won the first two, claiming his fourth and fifth Wimbledon titles by beating his Spanish rival in 2006 and 2007.

However, Nadal turned the tables in 2008, winning perhaps the greatest final of them all.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic: 2014-15

Two of the greatest champions at this event, Djokovic and Federer met in consecutive finals in the mid-2010s.

A decade ago the Serbian claimed his second title at the All England Club, edging past his Swiss rival in a legendary five-set final.

The following year it was more straightforward for him, prevailing in four sets.
