The 6 men to win Davis Cup & ATP Finals in same year: Jannik Sinner first in 31 years

Jannik Sinner’s domination of 2024 ended with another high on Sunday, the 23-year-old guiding Italy to Davis Cup glory in Malaga.

That was the final triumph of a special season for the world No 1, who came into the team event off the back of a maiden ATP Finals victory.

Sinner is just the sixth man to win the Davis Cup and ATP Finals in the same year – and has also achieved further history in 2024.

Stan Smith – 1970

Smith won the inaugural year-end championships in 1970 and was also part of the US team to win the Davis Cup that season.

The two-time Grand Slam singles champion won the ATP Finals through the event being held solely in a round-robin format, finishing ahead of tennis icon Rod Laver to claim the title.

He then won the deciding doubles rubber as America thrashed West Germany 5-0 in the Davis Cup final, one of four straight victories for the nation from 1969-72.

John McEnroe – 1978

Former world No 1 McEnroe remains the youngest ATP Finals champion – and the only teenage winner – thanks to the first of his three triumphs in 1978.

Aged only 19, the tennis great rallied from a set down to defeat Arthur Ashe in the final and win what was at the time the biggest title of his career.

McEnroe then won both his singles rubbers as the US defeated Great Britain 4-1 in the 1978 Davis Cup final, the first of five titles he won representing his nation in the team event.

Boris Becker – 1988

One of the most successful players in ATP Finals history, the first of Becker’s three titles at the year-end championships came in 1988.

The German downed Ivan Lendl in a five-set epic to prevail, having lost twice to the Czech in previous finals at the tournament.

1988 also saw Becker play a starring role in the first of back-to-back Davis Cup wins for the nation, beating Sweden’s Stefan Edberg in a singles rubber before sealing the title with a doubles triumph.

Andre Agassi – 1990

1990 saw tennis icon Agassi reach his first major final but also saw him win his sole ATP Finals title and the first of two Davis Cup wins as part of Team USA.

Agassi rallied from a set down to beat Stefan Edberg in straight sets in the year-end championships final, the biggest success of his career at the time.

He then won a key singles rubber as America claimed the Davis Cup title with a victory over Australia, going on to again win the title in 1992.

Michael Stich – 1993

Much like his compatriot Becker, former world No 2 Stich won both the year-end championships and Davis Cup titles in the same year.

Victory at the 1993 ATP Finals on home soil in Frankfurt was arguably Stich’s biggest triumph outside of his 1991 Wimbledon win, the German stunning Pete Sampras in four sets to lift the title.

He then starred for Germany in the Davis Cup final versus Australia, winning both his singles rubbers and the doubles on the nation’s way to a 4-1 win.

Jannik Sinner – 2024

Sinner capped off his landmark season with ATP Finals and Davis Cup triumphs within the space of a week.

The world No 1 became the first man since Lendl in 1986 to lift the title without dropping a set, beating Taylor Fritz in the final to triumph in Turin – having also beaten the American in the group stage.

A week later, the Italian did not lose a singles match in Malaga as he guided Italy to back-to-back Davis Cup titles, sealing the decisive rubber win versus Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands.

Sinner is the first man in history to win the ATP Finals, Davis Cup, and at least one Grand Slam title in the same year.
