The 7 women with the most US Open titles: Serena Williams tied on 6, Steffi Graf 3rd

There have been 28 different women’s singles champions at the US Open in the Open Era and two players share the record for the most titles. 

Chris Evert and Serena Williams have both claimed six US Open crowns, while Steffi Graf is the only other woman to reach five titles.

Here, we look at the seven players who have won three or more US Open women’s singles titles in the Open Era.

=5. Margaret Court – 3

After winning the US Open in 1962 and 1965, Margaret Court claimed three of her five titles at the New York Grand Slam in the Open Era.

In her title matches, the renowned Australian overcame Nancy Richey in 1969, Rosemary Casals in 1970 and Evonne Goolagong in 1973.

=5. Billie Jean King – 3

Having won her maiden US Open title in 1967, Billie Jean King collected three of her four crowns at her home major in the Open Era.

In her Open Era final victories, the American icon saw off Casals in 1971, Kerry Melville in 1972 and Goolagong in 1974.

=5. Kim Clijsters – 3

Kim Clijsters secured three US Open crowns from the four championship matches she reached at Flushing Meadows between 2003 and 2010.

In her successful title matches, the Belgian star defeated Mary Pierce in 2005, Caroline Wozniacki in 2009 and Vera Zvonareva in 2010.

4. Martina Navratilova  – 4

Martina Navratilova won four of the eight finals she featured in at the US Open from 1981 to 1991.

To secure her titles, the Czech-American great beat Chris Evert in 1983 and 1984, Helena Sukova in 1986 and Steffi Graf in 1987.

3. Steffi Graf – 5

Graf prevailed in five of the eight title matches she contested at the US Open between 1987 and 1996.

For her championship match victories, the German icon overcame Gabriela Sabatini in 1988, Navratilova in 1989, Sukova in 1993, and Monica Seles in 1995 and 1996.

=1. Serena Williams – 6

Serena Williams claimed six titles from the nine finals she reached at her home Grand Slam across a 20-year period from 1999 to 2019.

In her successful title matches, Williams downed Martina Hingis in 1999, Venus Williams in 2002, Jelena Jankovic in 2008, Victoria Azarenka in 2012 and 2013, and Caroline Wozniacki in 2014.

=1. Chris Evert – 6

Evert was the first woman to win more than three US Open titles in the Open Era, having won six of the nine championship matches she competed in between 1975 and 1984.

For her wins in finals, Evert defeated Goolagong in 1975 and 1976, Wendy Turnbull in 1977, Pam Shriver in 1978 and Hana Mandlikova in 1980 and 1982.

The American legend is the only woman to win the US Open on different surfaces: green clay (1975-1977) and hard courts (1978, 1980 and 1982).
