The 5 women with the most Canadian Open titles: Two legends tied for 1st, Serena Williams 3rd

Tennis greats Chris Evert and Monica Seles share the record for the most women’s singles titles at the Canadian Open, while three other stars are tied for third.
There are 12 women who have won the tournament multiple times in the Open Era, with Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Regina Marsikova, Steffi Graf, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Martina Hingis, Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin all on two titles.
Three former Canadian Open champions made the draw at the 2024 edition of the WTA 1000 event in Montreal: defending champion Jessica Pegula, 2019 winner Bianca Andreescu and 2017 titlist Elina Svitolina.
Here, we look at the five women who have won the Canadian Open singles title on three or more occasions in the Open Era.
=3. Simona Halep – 3 (2016, 2018, 2022)
Simona Halep has lifted the trophy at the WTA 1000 tournament in Canada three times, having won in Montreal twice (2016, 2018) and Toronto once (2022). The Romanian also lost in the final in 2015.
To win her three titles, Halep beat Madison Keys (2016), Sloane Stephens (2018) and Beatriz Haddad Maia (2022).

=3. Serena Williams – 3 (2001, 2011, 2013)
Serena Williams claimed all three of her Canadian Open titles in Toronto, while she was also a runner-up in 2000 and 2019.
The American downed Jennifer Capriati (2001), Samantha Stosur (2011) and Sorana Cirstea (2013) in the finals she won at the WTA 1000 event.
=3. Martina Navratilova – 3 (1982, 1983, 1989)
Martina Navratilova is a three-time champion in Canada, having triumphed in Montreal once (1982) and Toronto twice (1983, 1989).
The Czech-American was unbeaten in title matches at the hard-court tournament, with her final wins coming against Andrea Jaeger (1982), Chris Evert (1983) and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario (1989).
=1. Monica Seles – 4 (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998)
Seles collected her four Canadian Open crowns in consecutive years, with victories in Toronto in 1995 and 1997, and Montreal in 1996 and 1998. The Yugoslavian-American was also a beaten finalist in 1992 and 1999.
In her four successful championship matches, Seles overcame Amanda Coetzer (1995), Sanchez Vicario (1996, 1998) and Anke Huber (1997).
=1. Chris Evert – 4 (1974, 1980, 1984, 1985)
Evert secured the first of her four titles at the Canadian Open on clay in Toronto in 1974, before adding hard court triumphs at the event in Toronto (1980, 1985) and Montreal (1984). The American was also a runner-up in 1981 and 1983.
In her four final victories, Evert defeated four different players: Julie Heldman (1974), Virginia Ruzici (1980), Alycia Moulton (1984) and Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (1985).
