T365 Recall: Bernard Tomic’s 28-minute defeat to Jarkko Nieminen

Bernard Tomic disappointed

It was a case of blink and you will have missed it when Jarkko Nieminen obliterated Bernard Tomic in 28 minutes in Miami.

On March 20, 2014 Australian Tomic was playing in his first tournament since having hip surgery a few weeks earlier, but his Sony Ericsson Open campaign was over inside 30 minutes.

It was over in 28 minutes and 20 seconds to be exact.

Tomic, ranked 74th in the world and aged 21 at the time, lost 6-0, 6-1 to the Finn and they set a new record for the shortest-ever recorded match in the ATP Masters 1000.

The ATP Tour record stands at 25 minutes as Francisco Clavet beat Jiang Shan 6–0, 6–0 in the Heineken Open Shanghai in 2001.

Tomic won only one point in the first five games and 13 in total while the match included eight minutes of resting time.

Yet, he was not too downcast after creating unwanted history.

“This was the first match back after the operation. It’s all part of the rehabilitation process,” he said.

“I’m not disappointed. I just have to keep working to improve my game.”
