2022 French Open prize money breakdown: Increase in prize kitty with winners receiving €2.2m cheque

The men’s and women’s champions at this year’s French Open will each walk away with a handsome €2.2m (about £1.87m) while players who lose in the early round at Roland Garros will also get an increase in prize money.
This year’s overall prize pool for the clay-court Grand Slam is €43.6m (approximately £37m), up 25% from the €34m from 2021, although the past two years were affected by Covid-19 reductions. When compared to the 2019 tournament – the last event before the pandemic – it is a 6.8 per cent increase.
Novak Djokovic and Barbora Krejcikova each received a winner’s cheque of €1.4m (£1.1m) last year, but the last two players standing in the singles in Paris in 2022 will get a nearly double that. The €2.2m is also just €100,000 shy of the record-breaking €2.3m the winners received in 2019.
There is also good news for those who don’t make it into the main draw as players who lose in the first qualifying round will receive €14,000 compared to €10,000 last year while those who fall at the final qualifying hurdle will be paid €31,000.
Those who exit the main draw in the first round will receive €62,000, a significant jump from €46,000 in 2019.
“The increase in prize money for the first round of the singles main draws and the qualifying competitions is designed to help the players who have suffered the most as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic,” The French Tennis Federation said in a statement.
There has also been a six per cent increase in doubles prize money and the winning men’s and women’s pairs will take home €580,000 to split.
The 2022 French Open main draw starts on May 22 with the women’s final taking place on Saturday June 4 and the men’s final a day later.
