Rafael Nadal determined to keep improving despite Roland Garros dominance
Rafael Nadal says he must guard against arrogance and continue to strive to improve after he made a typically impressive start to another French Open campaign.
Nadal beat Yannick Hanfmann on Monday to extend his Roland Garros record to 87-2, as he chases an unprecedented 12th title on the Paris clay.
Despite that, he is adamant that he must take nothing for granted, and admitted he is still plagued by self-doubt, especially following injury.
“What I’ve done during all my career is go on court with the goal to improve something, and that makes me feel alive and makes me feel passionate about the process of improving anything,” Nadal told reporters.
“It’s difficult to be convinced that you’re okay,” he added. “I think when you’re convinced about something, you’re very arrogant, because most of the time you can hope that something is going to happen, and have the desire for something to happen.
“But to be convinced, I’m almost convinced about nothing.”
