This year, of course, marks 50 years since the start of the Open Era and the French Open was the first professional Grand Slam. American Nancy Richey won at Roland Garros in 1968, but couldn’t accept the £422 prize money as she was still an amateur.
“It was really unbelievable,” she said. “It disgusts me… [Americans] didn’t get to play for the prize money in the first year.”
