OFFICIAL: AELTC confirms Wimbledon 2020 has been cancelled ‘with great regret’

There will be no Wimbledon this year after the All England Lawn tennis Club confirmed on Wednesday that this year’s The Championships has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With no one quite sure when Covid-19 will hit its peak, Wimbledon has become the latest in a long list of high-profile sporting events to be axed or postponed.
The tennis powers that be originally announced that the sport would be on a hiatus until June 7 with a full grass-court season, including Wimbledon, pencilled in.
However, in recent weeks they admitted that there are no guarantees that competitive tennis will resume on June 8 as the coronavirus continues to spread rapidly.
AELTC, though, has decided not to adopt a wait and see policy and confirmed on Wednesday that the tournament, which was due to run from June 29-July 5, has been scrapped.
A short statement read: “It is with great regret that the AELTC today decided the 134th Championships, due to be staged in 2020, will be cancelled and instead staged from 28 June to 11 July 2021.
“Our efforts will now be focused on contributing to the emergency response and supporting those affected by the coronavirus crisis.”
