Wimbledon 2021 set to go ahead with or without spectators – report

Wimbledon will return to the tennis calendar in 2021 with a news report saying The Championships will be staged even if no fans are allowed to attend the tournament.

There was no Wimbledon this year, the first time since the Second World War that the grass-court Grand Slam didn’t take place, as tennis was forced to go on a five-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the sport has made a tentative return with the US Open taking place without fans at the end of August while the rescheduled French Open kicked off this week with a handful of spectators.

Two-time Wimbledon winner Andy Murray played in both the hard-court and clay-court majors and he admitted after his Roland Garros first-round exit that he hopes to play at SW19 next year with or without fans.

And he is likely to get his wish with The Times reporting that that Murray’s view “is shared by several figures involved with the organisation of the tournament”.

“We are actively engaged in planning for next year’s Championships and are considering multiple scenarios at this point in time, given that The Championships is still many months away,” Wimbledon organisers said in a statement.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled to run from June 28 until July 11.
