Wimbledon chiefs hand Bernard Tomic big fine after Wimbledon horror show

Australian tennis bad boy Bernard Tomic has been handed the £45,000 fine after his bizarre performance in his Wimbledon first-round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Tuesday.

Tomic looked uninterested as he slumped to a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 defeat in a match that lasted just 56 minutes and now the Wimbledon authorities have handed down a severe punishment for a player who has a reputation for erratic behaviour on and off the court.

The tennis rule book states that “all players are expected to perform to a professional standard in every Grand Slam match” and Tomic has been deemed to have broken that code of conduct with this statement being released by Wimbledon officials.

“It is the opinion of the Referee that the performance of Bernard Tomic in his first round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not meet the required professional standards, and therefore he has been fined the maximum amount of £45,000 which will be deducted from prize money,” it read. “The player will have the opportunity to appeal.”

Tomic worked his way through the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw at Wimbledon and he was evasive in his post-match press conference when quizzed on why he appeared uninterested in playing in the biggest tournament in his sport.

“I played good last week, played bad this week, simple,” he said while slumped in his chair in front of the media. “I think I played as best as I could. It’s just I played terrible.”

This is not the first time Tomic has fallen foul of tennis regulations, with his past transgressions including abusing spectators and opponents, but he does appear to have too many concerns after previously stating his favourite pastime was ‘counting the millions’ in his bank account.

That account will now be a little lighter after his latest embarrassing trip to Wimbledon.
