Aryna Sabalenka extends incredible Australia match win record after latest Brisbane victory
Aryna Sabalenka’s fine recent form in Australia continued as the world No 1 forced her way past Yulia Putintseva to reach the last eight of the Brisbane International.
Sabalenka did not face an easy match against close friend Putintseva in their round of 16 contest, with the Kazakh up an early break inside the Pat Rafter Arena.
However, the world No 1 rallied to reach her second straight quarter-final in Brisbane with a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory.
“She’s [Putintseva] an amazing player, she’s my friend, and she’ll always push you to work really hard for every point,” said Sabalenka.
“Yes, I’m a perfectionist, but I’m really happy with the level I played today, with the points I built today. Of course, I’m super happy with the win.”
One of just two seeds left in the draw at the quarter-finals stage, top seed Sabalenka will face the unseeded Marie Bouzkova for a place in the last four on Friday.
World No 44 Bouzkova won in three sets when the pair last met at the Washington Open in 2024, though the in-form Belarusian will head into this clash as a significant favourite.
Sabalenka may well be helped by her playing in Australia, where she has now won 24 of 25 matches since the beginning of 2023.

Her staggering run of form Down Under began with her winning the 2023 Adelaide International. She then went on to win her first Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Sabalenka reached the Brisbane final 12 months ago, but she suffered her only loss to date across the past three seasons in Australia—falling 6-0, 6-3 to key rival Elena Rybakina.
However, she went on to seal a second straight title at the Australian Open last January and has so far won two matches in Brisbane this week, against Renata Zarazua and Putintseva.
Should the world No 1 win an 18th career title in Brisbane and then claim a third straight Australian Open title, that would bring her record to 34 wins in the space of 35 matches Down Under.
The only other seed left in Brisbane is eighth seed Mirra Andreeva, who could face Sabalenka in the semi-finals.
