Bianca Andreescu alludes to potential comeback as she sets sights on huge event
Bianca Andreescu has suggested her return from injury will begin shortly before the French Open – with a maiden Olympic Games also in her sights this season.
A former world No 4 and the 2019 US Open champion, Andreescu’s burgeoning career has been dogged by injuries so far, most notably the back issue that has most affected her recently.
The Canadian won three huge titles in 2019 – at Indian Wells, the Canadian Open, and a maiden Slam at Flushing Meadows – though still missed a large chunk of the mid-season due to physical struggles.
She did not play throughout 2020 due to a combination of COVID-19 lockdowns and injury and has never really been able to get consistent game time on the WTA Tour.
She last played at the Canadian Open in August last year and has not spoken publicly too often about when she would return.
However, she has revealed during a fan Q+A on her Instagram that she is targeting a return next month, just ahead of the second Grand Slam of 2024 at Roland Garros.

When asked when she would return, she responded: “Week before the French Open!! Miss you all so much, can’t wait.”
That would mean the world No 220 plays at either the WTA 500 event in Strasbourg or WTA 250 event in Rabat, before potentially playing at a major for the first time since Wimbledon last year.
Meanwhile, the Canadian also reaffirmed her desire to represent Canada at the Olympic Games.
Andreescu missed Tokyo 2020 due to injury and has previously spoken about her aim to play in Paris this August.
In an interview last December, she said of playing in Paris: “We’re very close but right now I am still dealing with my back injury.
“It is getting better every single day and I am doing everything I can to get there as fast as possible but these things take time.”
And she doubled down on her desire on Instagram, responding to a question about whether she would head to Paris 2024 by saying: “Yesss. It’ll be my first one. Something I’ve been dreaming for.”
Andreescu may use a protected ranking to enter Paris 2024, or could benefit from special Wildcards saved for past Grand Slam winners.
