Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will continue to dominate the ATP Tour and will “write the plot” of 2025, according to one top coach.

Spaniard Alcaraz and Italian Sinner were the most successful male players of 2024, sweeping the Grand Slams between them.

World No 1 Sinner won the Australian and US Open titles, winning eight titles in total and holding a 73-6 record for the season.

Alcaraz struggled for consistency at times and finished the year two spots below his rival as the world No 3, though he completed the ‘Channel Slam’ with victories at the French Open and Wimbledon.

He also won all three meetings between the two in 2024, moving from 3-4 down to lead their head-to-head 6-4.

All eyes are on whether a consistent challenger will emerge in 2025 but according to Vincenzo Santopadre, the former coach of Matteo Berrettini, that is unlikely to happen.

Speaking to Tuttosport, the Italian described compatriot Sinner as a “spectacle” and said that he and Alcaraz would come to define the next 12 months.

“I saw him [Sinner] train in Dubai. A spectacle. He continues to invest in himself, he has never stopped doing so,” said Santopadre.

“He is constantly adding new important details to his game. You will find him improved. It’s a question of mentality. His is forged in the hardest mineral there is. He is an alien.

Future Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz rival named by top coach – ‘Give him time’

Grand Slam legend sends a message to Nick Kyrgios after latest Jannik Sinner outburst

“There is a dispute going on between the two. Friendly, but very serious, and it brings into play many aspects of today’s tennis.

“Continuity or talent? Solidity or Ping Pong Tennis? Application, study, planning. There is also the personal challenge.

“Sinner is thousands of points ahead in the rankings, but he [Alcaraz] has beaten the other three times. It seems like a promising line-up for a great show.

“Then, you know, tennis is varied. There will be new additions, some novelties, some important returns. But those two will write the plot.”

Sinner is almost 5,000 points ahead of Alcaraz in the rankings, after a season that saw him win 92.4% of his matches – the ninth-best win rate produced by a male singles player in the Open Era.

And, though he expects Alcaraz to move up to second, Santopadre does not predict any significant changes at the top.

He added: “I don’t see any big changes. Sinner is number one for continuity, ahead of Alcaraz, who I think is working in the same direction.

“I put the Spaniard at number two, but closer to Sinner in the score. Then Zverev, Medvedev and in fifth place Rublev, because I like him, he’s a very good guy and very nice.”
