Roger Federer impressed by Kyle Edmund and Hyeon Chung

Roger Federer says it is “great to see new names on the scene” after the unseeded Kyle Edmund and Hyeon Chung reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Defending champion Federer beat Tomas Berdych in straight sets on Wednesday to set up a last-four clash against Chung.

The 20-year-old Chung became the first Korean to reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam when he stunned six-time champion Novak Djokovic in the fourth round, and he went one better when he beat American Tennys Sandgren in straight sets in the last eight.

Edmund, meanwhile, produced upset after upset as beat 11th seed and US Open finalist Kevin Anderson in the first round and then beat third seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-final to set up a clash against Marin Cilic.

Federer admits it is good to see fresh blood at the latter stages of a Grand Slam.

“I’ve never played Chung or Edmund. It’s great to see new names on the scene. We need it,” he said.

“The way both of them have played is highly impressive. Beating Grigor, beating Novak on this court is extremely difficult. Chung reminds me of Novak, sliding across the back of the court and getting balls back.”
