Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek & Simona Halep doping cases ‘absolute tragedy’, claims former No 4
Doping cases concerning Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek, and Simona Halep have been referred to as “an absolute tragedy” by former world No 4 Guy Forget.
Sinner, Swiatek, and Halep – all multiple Grand Slam champions – have found themselves making headlines amid doping violations in 2024.
Former world No 1 and two-time major winner Halep saw an initial four-year ban cut down to just nine months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) back in March.
This enabled the Romanian to immediately return to the WTA Tour, having previously been sidelined since the 2022 US Open.
Meanwhile, current ATP No 1 Sinner and WTA world No 2 Swiatek have both been embroiled in doping sagas throughout the second half of the season.
There are understandably nuances and differences between the three cases, though one key similarity is that all three have ultimately been cleared of intentionally taking banned substances.
Speaking to Tennis Actu, former French ATP star Forget claimed that such cases were “an absolute tragedy for those who are innocent”, referring to the three high-profile stars in question.
He said: “I still have the impression that there is such a degree of sophistication in the tests. You can find a teaspoon of sugar in an Olympic swimming pool.
“There are so many players who take food supplements and vitamins, who can take polluted elements and who, even without knowing it, lead to positive tests.

“It is an absolute tragedy for those who are innocent – I am not talking about those who are guilty and repeat offenders.
“I put myself in the shoes of an athlete who tested positive for a substance in infinitesimal quantity. You can say to yourself: ‘I am going to be prevented from living my passion’ – without wanting to cheat.
“I see things a bit like that for Halep, Swiatek and Sinner.”
Sinner was initially found to be of “no fault” by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) in August 2024 after twice testing positive for clostebol back in March.
However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has since announced an appeal against the ITIA’s ruling to CAS, questioning the severity of the Italian’s punishment.
World No 1 Sinner won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January, and would then win his second major at the US Open just weeks after the decision into his case was made public.
Meanwhile, Swiatek was handed a one-month suspension in November after being found to be of “no significant fault” following a failed drug test at the Cincinnati Open in August.
The Pole was able to successfully argue that her melatonin medication had inadvertently been contaminated by TMZ.
Swiatek won five WTA titles in 2024, including a fourth triumph at Roland Garros.
