Nick Kyrgios believes there is only one way to “shut people up” and that is to win a Grand Slam as he admitted that lifting a major trophy is his main target.

Former world No 13 Kyrgios has not played competitive tennis since June last year as he has struggled with various injuries to his knee, foot and wrist.

Away from the court, the Australian is still active in tennis as he has had several commentary roles at the various Grand Slams, including at the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year.

On the back of those successful gigs, there had been speculation that the 29-year-old could hang up his tennis racket for good, but Kyrgios insists he will eventually make a return.

“I am coming back because something is keeping me around the game,” he said on the News Corp Code Sports podcast.

“I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a Grand Slam, won a doubles title in a Grand Slam, won multiple titles and made money.

“But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a Grand Slam. I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up at the end of the day. That will be my deep motivation.”

Kyrgios won the 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles title alongside friend and compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis and six months later he finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.

It is his hunt for a Grand Slam singles title that is driving him and keeping him motivated although he admits he only has a couple of years left.

“I’m far from done, to be honest. I’m in the later stages of my career, but I still have one or two years left… I’m feeling extremely well,” he said.

“I’m hitting for around three hours every day now. My wrist from surgery has completely healed and I’m feeling motivated.”

He is set to make his return to action in the exhibition World Tennis League event in Abu Dhabi in December while his first competitive tournament is likely to be the Australian Open in January next year.

The seven-time ATP Tour singles title winner added: “I don’t want to think about retirement, but at the same time, I understand that it is coming to an end.

“I don’t think it’s ever going to be easy.”
