Novak Djokovic pushed hard, Marco Trungelliti’s fairytale over

Novak Djokovic didn’t have it all his own way, but he is into the French Open third round.

The former world No 1 will be the first to admit that he was given a good test by Jaume Munar, but the Spaniard still lost 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 17 minutes.

Munar, in fact, had the early advantage as he broke in the first game of the match, but Djokovic hit back immediately. Both players lost their serves again as it went to the tie-breaker, which was then dominated by the Serb.

After both players again lost their serves early on in the second set, Djokovic started to take charge and claimed the crucial break in game nine, and then in game seven of the third set.

The 12-time Grand Slam winner will face another Spaniard in round three after Roberto Bautista Agut beat Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

Two more Spaniards advanced as 10th seed Pablo Carreno Busta beat Federico Delbonis from Argentina 7-6 (7-0), 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4 while the 20th seed Fernando Verdasco saw off Guido Andreozzi 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Marco Trungelliti, the man who made headlines on the opening few days at Roland Garros, is heading back to Barcelona as he was beaten 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 by Marco Cecchinato from Italy.

Argentine Trungelliti captured the imagination of the public after he took a nine-hour, 1,000km road trip from Barcelona with his brother, mother and grandmother in order to compete in the first round.

He ended up beating Bernard Tomic, but his journey is now over.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Chardy advanced with a five-set win over Tomas Berdych.

The match was suspended on Tuesday due to bad light, but Frenchman Chardy came back on Wednesday to beat the 17th seed from the Czech Republic 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (10-8), 1-6, 5-7, 6-2 in four hours and 20 minutes.
