Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz feature on list of most top-10 wins

Novak Djokovic leads the way for most wins against top-10 players at Grand Slams, but Carlos Alcaraz is quickly making his way up the list.

Tennis great Djokovic is at the forefront for match wins against top 10 players at all levels as he sits on an incredible 257, but interestingly he hasn’t scored one win against a top-10 rival so far during the 2024 season.

The 24-time major champion is well clear of Roger Federer (224) and Rafael Nadal (186) for all-time top-10 victories while the trio also leads the list for most match wins against top-10 rivals at the four Grand Slams (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open).

Federer – who scored 55 top-10 wins at majors – falls away for active players following his retirement in 2022.

The active players with most top-10 victories at all levels is an interesting one as someone like Alexander Zverev is sixth, but the German has only four wins at Grand Slams with one coming against Alcaraz at this year’s Australian Open and another against Casper Ruud at the French Open a few months later.

Former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori has 40 wins over top-10 players with only nine at Grand Slams, Stefanos Tsitsipas has 35 top-10 wins, but only five have been at the Slams with the last in 2022.

In case you were wondering, reigning world No 1 Jannik Sinner has 29 top-10 wins with six coming at Slams.

Active Players With The Most Top 10 Wins At Grand Slams

7. Carlos Alcaraz – 11

Four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz has a 31-16 record against players who were in the top 10 of the ATP Rankings at the time of the match.

Eleven of his wins have been at Grand Slams with five of those coming in the space of a month at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2024.

Alcaraz defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas (9), Jannik Sinner (2) and Alexander Zverev (4) at the French Open and followed it up with wins over Medvedev (5) and Novak Djokovic (2) at the All England Club.

Expect him to shoot up on this list in the years to come.

6. Daniil Medvedev – 12

2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev is closing in on 50 top-10 wins as he sits on 46. Last year he recorded 12 victories and he is on five so far this year.

Four of his five top-10 wins in 2024 have come at Grand Slams as he beat Hubert Hurkacz (9) and Zverev (6) at the Australian Open while he got the scalps of Grigor Dimitrov (10) and Sinner (1) at Wimbledon.

5. Marin Cilic – 14

Marin Cilic was the man to beat Kei Nishikori in the 2014 US Open final. Incidentally, although Nishikori was seeded 10th at the tournament, he was actually the world No 11 at the time as he was bumped up a spot after world No 2 Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal.

But Cilic did get two top-10 wins at Flushing Meadows that year as he stunned Roger Federer (3) in the semi-finals and also beat Tomas Berdych (7).

The last of his 14 top-10 wins at majors came at Roland Garros in 2022 when he defeated Andrey Rublev (7) in five sets.

=3. Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka – 21

Three-time Grand Slam winners Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka are joint-third for active players with the most Grand Slam wins against top-10 opponents.

Murray sits on a total of 105 wins at all levels while Wawrinka has 62.

Murray’s first-ever top-10 win at Grand Slams came at Wimbledon in 2006 when he defeated Andy Roddick (5) in the third round while his last was against Nishikori (9) at the 2017 French Open. Unsurprisingly, his best year was in 2016 when he claimed four top-10 wins at the majors.

Wawrinka has a 62–102 record against top 10 players with 21 wins coming at the majors. His first was against Mariano Puerta (10) at the 2005 US Open and his most recent at the 2020 Australian Open against Daniil Medvedev (4). Five of his top-10 wins at Grand Slam level have been against the world No 1.

2. Rafael Nadal – 55

Rafael Nadal’s first-ever top-10 win at a Grand Slam was a significant one as he defeated world No 1 Roger Federer in the semi-final at Roland Garros in 2005 and then beat the unseeded Puerta in the final to win his maiden Slam.

In 2011, he claimed six top-10 wins at majors with Andy Murray copping four defeats as he was beaten at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

1. Novak Djokovic – 69

An incredible 69 of Djokovic’s 257 top-10 victories have come at Grand Slams, although they have dried up this year. His two top-10 major defeats this year have come against Jannik Sinner (4) in the semi-final of the Australian Open and against Alcaraz (3) in the final at Wimbledon.

Djokovic secured his maiden top-10 win at a Grand Slam against Fernando González (9) at the 2006 French Open and his most recent was against Medvedev (3) in the final of the 2023 US Open.

In 2012, Djokovic won seven matches against top-10 opponents at majors, in 2015 he won nine while in 2021 and 2022 he recorded eight wins in each year.
