Carlos Alcaraz and Lorenzo Musetti were handed boosts in the ATP Rankings thanks to their performances at the Italian Open while Alexander Zverev’s failure to defend his title will have a big impact on his French Open hopes.

Alcaraz’s run to the semi-final in Rome helped him to nail down second place in the rankings behind Jannik Sinner and with it he also secured the No 2 seeding for Roland Garros.

The four-time Grand Slam winner will battle Musetti for a place in the final at Foro Italico and a title run could see him close the points deficit to Sinner to just over 1,000 points after it was more than 4,000 at one stage.

But Sinner – playing in his first tournament since his serving his three-month doping ban – could also extend the lead as he will face Tommy Paul in the semi-final.

ATP Top 10 Before Italian Open

1. Jannik Sinner – 9,730 points
2. Alexander Zverev – 8,085
3. Carlos Alcaraz – 7,850
4. Taylor Fritz – 4,815
5. Jack Draper – 4,440
6. Novak Djokovic – 4,130
7. Casper Ruud – 3,715
8. Alex de Minaur – 3,635
9. Lorenzo Musetti – 3,550
10. Holger Rune – 3,440

Sinner has once again broken through the 10,000-point barrier in the rankings after demolishing Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter-final.

With Alcaraz secured of the No 2 seeding for his Roland Garros title defence, it means Zverev will be seeded third and he will meet either Sinner or Zverev in the semi-final in Paris should they all get that far.

Jack Draper had a chance to move to a career-high No 4, but his defeat to Alcaraz in the quarter-final put paid to that quest as he remains at No 5 with Novak Djokovic at No 6 and Casper Ruud at No 7.

Musetti’s excellent clay-court season continues with his run to the semi-final of his home event and he is up to No 8 while he could move as high as sixth if he wins the title.

Impressive, considering the Italian started the clay-court season at No 16 in the rankings.

There will be a newcomer to the top 20 when the rankings are updated on Monday as Jakub Mensik will climb two places to a new career-high of No 19. The Czech teenager reached the fourth round in Italy, but his rise was set up by his Miami Open title run.

It does mean Stefanos Tsitsipas is down to No 20 – his lowest position since 2018.

Big Winners

There were no +20 surges in the top 100, but Camilo Ugo Carabelli is up eight spots to a new career-high of No 52 and one spot behind him is Jacob Fearnley after the Brit climbed four spots.

Jaume Munar enjoyed a fine run in Rome as he reached the last 16 as his reward is a 10-place jump to No 56.

Big Losers

Zhizhen Zhang reached the quarter-final of the 2024 Italian Open, but didn’t compete this year and he will be hit with a 25-place drop to No 30.

But that is not as bad as Nicolas Jarry as the Chilean finished runner-up to Zverev last year, but lost in the second round this time around. The former world No 16 is projected to fall 96 places to No 149.
