2025 Australian Open preview
Action at the Australian Open this year is headlined by defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, who are the favourites to retain their men’s and women’s singles titles respectively.
ATP world No 1 Sinner’s title defence does not come without controversy, with the Italian waiting for the outcome of WADA’s appeal concerning his doping case.
However, after a dominant 2024, the 23-year-old is a significant favourite to win what would be a third Grand Slam title.
Looking to stop him in his tracks are third seed Carlos Alcaraz, who hopes to complete the Career Grand Slam, and seventh seed Novak Djokovic, who is targeting a 25th Grand Slam singles title.
Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, Sabalenka will look to become the sixth woman in the Open Era to win three consecutive titles Down Under.
The Belarusian defeated Elena Rybakina in the 2023 final and Zheng Qinwen 12 months ago, and will hope to become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1999 to win three straight titles.
Among her closest rivals will be second seed Iga Swiatek and third seed Coco Gauff, both of whom are looking to win their first Australian Open title, while the likes of Rybakina and Qinwen will also challenge.
