2025 Grand Slam predictions: Coco Gauff’s second Slam, Carlos Alcaraz & Iga Swiatek triumph

We are less than one week away from the start of the 2025 Grand Slam season, with the Australian Open underway on January 12th.

Action in Melbourne will be followed by the French Open in May, Wimbledon at the end of June, and the US Open at the end of August.

Men’s singles majors last year were dominated by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who won two Grand Slams apiece to deny the likes of Novak Djokovic.

Aryna Sabalenka was the most successful women’s singles player, winning two major titles while Iga Swiatek and Barbora Krejcikova triumphed.

Ahead of the Slam season, we predict who will lift the majors in 2025.

Australian Open

ATP: We haven’t seen Alcaraz or Sinner in action this year, which makes the opening few matches of the men’s singles draw in Melbourne even more interesting.

Defending champion Sinner is a warm favourite but Alcaraz should better his 2024 quarter-final showing at the very least, and Djokovic and Alexander Zverev will threaten.

WTA: Defending champion Sabalenka, Gauff, Swiatek, and Rybakina all showed promising form this past week, making this draw hugely intriguing.

Gauff has arguably positioned herself above Swiatek in the pecking order of contenders, but can she topple ‘Honorary Aussie’ Sabalenka?

Predicted Champions: Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka

French Open

ATP: The French Open is perhaps the toughest ATP slam to pick, with clay courts appearing to be a bit of a leveller across the very top of the game.

Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas will threaten here more than anyone else but, having won with limited prep in 2024, Alcaraz is the favourite for 2025; it’s up to Sinner, Zverev, Djokovic and co to try and stop him.

WTA: We are months away from Roland Garros, and yet Swiatek already looms large as a significant favourite to win what would be a fifth title in the space of six years.

The Pole is the dominant clay courter of her generation and it will be interesting to see who can challenge her – though no woman in the Open Era has won four straight titles at the event.

Predicted Champions: Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek

Wimbledon

ATP: A seven-time champion at Wimbledon and the runner-up the past two years, Djokovic should never be discounted at the All England Club.

However, overcoming two-time champion Alcaraz and Sinner – who has a serve made for grass – will be a tough challenge. All eyes are on a potential Sinner vs Alcaraz blockbuster on the natural surface the Italian is most likely to find success, though history favours the Spaniard.

WTA: Surprise champions Marketa Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova have shocked SW19 the past two years – so another outsider winner is not to be unexpected.

Swiatek and Gauff face the challenge of finding success at their least successful major, while Rybakina looks to find the form that guided her to the 2022 title – and Sabalenka looks to bounce back from her 2024 heartbreak.

Predicted Champions: Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka

US Open

ATP: The past six editions of the US Open have crowned six different champions, in what has proven to be the most unpredictable of the four majors from an ATP perspective.

Djokovic, Alcaraz, and reigning champion Sinner are hesitantly in contention – while this seems like the most likely place for Taylor Fritz and, in particular, Zverev to win their major duck.

WTA: Swiatek, Gauff, and Sabalenka are the last three champions in New York, and right now it seems hard to see who would break through those three.

With a home crowd behind and looking like she is in the best form of her career, world No 3 Gauff may fancy her chances here.

Predicted Champions: Alexander Zverev and Coco Gauff
