Latest Paris 2024 tennis news and results: What you may have missed

Angelique Kerber
Angelique Kerber is still alive in her final event.

The tennis event at Paris 2024 has delivered some massive talking points so far.

The 60th meeting between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, an epic win for Andy Murray in his final event, and good starts for Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff have all attracted headlines.

However, some other results and talking points have not attracted the same attention.

We take you through some ‘hidden gem’ stories from the opening couple of days at the Olympics.

Kerber’s last dance continues

Few non-French players in Paris will garner as much support as Angelique Kerber, who is calling time on her epic career after her Olympic campaign.

The three-time major winner and former world No 1 is a former Olympic medallist, and looks set to go out with her head held high after extending her stay in the French capital.

After an impressive win in her round one match versus Naomi Osaka, the German was roared on by the Roland Garros crowd against Jaqueline Cristian on Monday.

Kerbed fought her way past the Romanian in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory, and is now into round three.

Top mixed seeds out

Combining their respective singles and doubles rankings, Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund were top seeds in the mixed doubles draw.

However, the Germans fell at the first hurdle – having been handed a brutal opening round draw.

Zverev and Siegemund were drawn against Czech stars Katerina Siniakova – a nine-time major winner – and Tomas Machac.

It was a tough draw for both pairings, and it was Siniakova and Machac who prevailed 6-4, 7-5.

Paul/Fritz off to strong start

Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz are both best known for their singles exploits, but are playing together in the men’s doubles draw in Paris.

The American aces are a solid medal shout, seeded third in the draw thanks to their singles rankings, and got their campaign underway with a good win.

An opening match against Felix Auger-Aliassime and Milos Raonic was not an easy draw, but Fritz/Paul won a mammoth first-set tiebreak 16-14.

That propelled them to victory, ultimately sealing a 7-6(14), 6-4 triumph.

Men’s doubles chaos

Fritz and Paul’s win is even more impressive considering how wide-open the draw has been elsewhere.

Of the eight seeded pairs, five of them were defeated in round one – including top seeds Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori of Italy.

They were beaten by experienced Spaniards Marcel Granollers and Pablo Carreno Busta, while defending champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic are among the other seeded pairs to fall.

Alongside Fritz and Paul, American fourth seeds Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram and German second seed Tim Putz and Kevin Krawietz are still alive.
