The WTA 1000 tournament in Rome is set for a strong field, with all the biggest stars in the women’s game on the 2025 entry list.

Iga Swiatek is the defending Italian Open champion, having beaten Aryna Sabalenka in the 2024 championship match to secure her third crown at the Foro Italico.

This year’s edition of the historic clay tournament, which was first held in 1930, will be held from May 6-18.

How many players will feature in the main draw?

The Italian Open women’s singles main draw will feature 96 players, with world No 71 the initial cutoff for direct entrants. There will be eight wildcards and 12 qualifiers.

Which players have received wildcards?

The wildcards for this year’s Italian Open are yet to be confirmed, but expect a heavy focus on players from the host nation. In 2024, all eight wildcards went to Italians.

Which former champions will play?

Three Italian Open winners are set to compete: Swiatek (2021, 2022 and 2024), Elena Rybakina (2023) and Elina Svitolina (2017 and 2018).

Will Emma Raducanu and Alex Eala play?

Emma Raducanu, the current world No 47, has entered.

Alex Eala, who is ranked 73rd, narrowly missed the main draw cutoff, but she is the second alternate after Caroline Dolehide and, therefore, has a good chance of playing given the likelihood of withdrawals.

Have any players used a special ranking to enter?

Petra Kvitova, Bianca Andreescu, Sorana Cirstea and Anastasija Sevastova have all used a special ranking to enter Rome.

Have any players withdrawn?

As things stand, no players have pulled out. Barbora Krejcikova’s participation is uncertain given she is yet to play this year due to injury.
