With the back-to-back hard-court 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami complete, the tennis tour has switched surfaces to clay.

There are WTA Tour events in Charleston and Bogota taking place this week, but many of the biggest stars on the women’s tour will start their clay campaign at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart.

The prestigious WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart is played on indoor clay at the Porsche Arena.

Here, we look at the eight seeds set to play this year – and what else to look out for.

WTA Stuttgart projected seeds (based on WTA Rankings as of March 31)

1) Aryna Sabalenka
2) Iga Swiatek
3) Coco Gauff
4) Jessica Pegula
5) Jasmine Paolini
6) Mirra Andreeva
7) Zheng Qinwen
8) Emma Navarro

Key takeaways

There is set to be a very strong field, with the top four players in the world — Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula — all on the entry list.

Sabalenka, the world No 1, will be seeking her first title in Stuttgart, having been a runner-up in three consecutive years between 2021 and 2023.

Swiatek, who will be seeded second, will aim to win her third title after being a champion in 2022 and 2023.

The presence of Jasmine Paolini, Mirra Andreeva and Zheng Qinwen means seven of the current top 10 in the WTA Rankings will be in action.

Emma Navarro, the current world No 11, is projected to occupy the eighth and final seeded position.

World No 10 Elena Rybakina is the defending champion, having beaten Marta Kostyuk in the 2024 final, but she has opted not to enter the tournament this year.

Australian Open winner and world No 5 Madison Keys is a notable absentee, while world No 9 Paula Badosa and 15th-ranked Barbora Krejcikova have withdrawn due to injuries.

Emma Raducanu played in Stuttgart in each of the past three seasons, but she has chosen to compete at the Open de Rouen WTA 250 event instead this year.

When is the draw?

The date for the draw ceremony is yet to be confirmed. In 2024, it took place the day before main draw play got underway.

If that happens again this year, the draw ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 13.

Tournament dates

Main draw action will take place from April 14-21, with qualifying set to be held on April 12 and 13.

A post on the Porsche Newsroom website explains why the singles final will be held on Monday, April 21:

“Due to the regional Baden-Wuerttemberg by-laws governing public holidays, there will be no play on Good Friday (18 April). The singles final will therefore take place on Easter Monday (21 April). The doubles final will be played the day before on Easter Sunday.”

Ranking points and prize money

As Stuttgart is a WTA 500 tournament, the champion will receive 500 points.

The runner-up will earn 325 points, semi-finalists 195 points, and quarter-finalists 108 points.

The total financial commitment for the tournament is $1,064,510, while the winner will also receive the main prize: a Porsche Macan Turbo.
