Serena Williams makes her pick in the debate over who is the tennis GOAT

Serena Williams has joined the debate on who should be hailed as the great player of all time – and firmly pinned her colours to the Roger Federer mast.

Williams took part in the #Rally4Relief event that helped to raise $4.8m to help the huge fund to help victims of the Australian bush-fires, with Team Williams taking on star-studded line-up led by 2018 Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki.

After Wozniacki introduced local favourite Nick Kyrgios to the crowd at the Rod Laver Arena, it fell to Williams to announce the next member of her team and she proclaimed: ‘How about the GOAT?”

Fans in the stadium then waited to see who would emerge from the tunnel, with Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic all having strong claims for the title of greatest of all-time in an era when they have set new standards for the sport.

Yet it was Federer who made his way onto court, receiving a raucous reception from his adoring public.

The tennis family has raised millions of pounds for the Australian bush-fire appeal in the run-up to next week’s opening Grand Slam of the season at Melbourne Park.
