7 sensational Iga Swiatek stats as Pole becomes first player in 31 years to achieve crazy feat

Iga Swiatek has been a dominant force in tennis since her rise to the top of the women’s game and the numbers illustrate her stunning achievements. 

The Polish superstar remarkably claimed her first ever title with her triumph at the 2020 French Open, where she remarkably dropped just 28 games in her seven straight-set wins. The world No 2 has won 16 WTA titles, including four Grand Slams and six WTA 1000 tournaments.

The 22-year-old is currently in action at the 2023 WTA Finals, which is being played in Cancun, Mexico.

Here is a look at seven fantastic Iga Swiatek statistics after she reached yet another stellar feat during her opening match at the year-end championships.

Winning over 20 sets 6-0 in back-to-back years

With her 7-6(3), 6-0 victory against world No 6 Marketa Vondrousova at the WTA Finals on Monday, Swiatek became the first player in 31 years to win more than 20 sets by a 6-0 scoreline in back-to-back seasons.

According to Opta, legendary duo Steffi Graf and Monica Seles were the last players to win more than 20 ‘bagel’ sets in successive years, with the rivals both achieving this in 1991 and 1992.

131 victories in the last two seasons

The win over Vondrousova in Cancun was Swiatek’s 131st victory since the beginning of the 2022 campaign and saw her become the fourth player this century to win over 130 matches in a two-season span.

Former world No 1’s Jelena Jankovic (145 wins in 2007-08), Serena Williams (136 wins 2012-13) and Caroline Wozniacki (132 wins 2009-10) are the only other women to surpass the 130-win mark across two campaigns.

No one has beaten more top 10 players in one year than Swiatek since 2020

In the last four seasons on the WTA Tour, the Pole holds the two highest tallies for wins against opponents ranked in the top 10.

During her incredible 2022 campaign, she defeated 15 of the 17 top 10 players she faced all year, with her victories coming consecutively.

Swiatek’s win against Vondrousova was her ninth triumph over a top 10 opponent this season, and she could add another four wins if she claims the WTA Finals title undefeated.

Most WTA 1000 titles before turning 23 since 2009

With her victory at the China Open in Beijing in October, Swiatek became the first player to win six titles at WTA 1000 level before the age of 23 since the format was introduced in 2009.

The 22-year-old surpassed Wozniacki’s tally of five WTA 1000 titles, which was previously the most any player had won before turning 23.

Third-longest first-time streak as world No 1

Swiatek’s 75-week reign as world No 1 ended when she was overtaken by Aryna Sabalenka after the 2023 US Open, where she was downed by Jelena Ostapenko in the last 16.

The Pole’s streak was was the third-longest in WTA history for a first-time No 1, behind only Graf and Martina Hingis.

Fewest double faults in the top 10

While the world No 2’s serve is not one of her biggest weapons, she leads the current top 10 in the WTA Rankings in multiple serving categories this season.

Swiatek has has hit the fewest double faults among the top ten with 119 following her match with Vondrousova in Cancun. She also had the highest percentage of second serve points won with 54.2%, and the highest overall service points won at 64.5%, heading into the WTA Finals.

Most matches played on the WTA Tour

The four-time Grand Slam champion has played more singles matches than any other player on the WTA Tour this year, with her win over Vondrousova her 75th outing of 2023.

World No 5 Jessica Pegula has played the second-highest number with 72 following her two matches so far in Cancun.
