Alexander Zverev reveals extent of his injury as he vows to find ‘best and quickest way’ to recover
Alexander Zverev has vowed to find the “best and quickest way” to recover from the foot injury he suffered during his Roland Garros semi-final against Rafael Nadal.
After going toe-to-toe with the 13-time French Open champion in the first two sets on Friday, Zverev slipped and twisted his ankle during the latter stages of the second set. He screamed and collapsed to the ground.
The world No 3 left the court in a wheelchair before returning on crutches to confirm to the chair umpire that he would not be able to continue.
In the aftermath, Zverev confirmed that he suffered a “very serious injury” and on Saturday he gave a further update.
“I am now on my way back home. Based on the first medical checks, it looks like I have torn several lateral ligaments in my right foot,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I will be flying to Germany on Monday to make further examinations and to determine the best and quickest way for me to recover.
“I want to thank everyone all over the world for the kind messages that I have received since yesterday. Your support means a lot to me right now!
“And many thanks to my friends from @goodwill_private_aviation for taking such good care of me in the given circumstances.
I will try to keep you updated as much as possible on further developments.
“See you next time @rolandgarros!🧡”
