World No 3 Alexander Zverev has shown a good character on his quest to win the Australian Open after he eased past Moldovian qualifier Radu Albot 6-3 6-4 6-4 on John Cain Arena on Friday.

The 24-year-old will meet world No 14 Canadian Denis Shapovalov on Sunday.

On Wednesday the world No 3 sailed into the third round at Melbourne Park with a superb 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 win over John Millman at Rod Laver Arena.

The German started his campaign well following a second round win over Aleksandar Vukic 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.

“I think Radu is in great form, he’s played five matches so far, so he is obviously playing well, feeling the ball well,” said Zverev after the match.

“I am happy to be through in three sets. I had my struggles on the court today, I didn’t feel perfect, but who is perfect? At the end of the day I won and I’m happy about that.”

With the absence of the world No1 Novak Djokovic, Zverev is cementing his place as the favourite to clinch the 2022 Australian Open. But he will have to do that the hard way as the tournament still has the likes of Rafael Nadal.
