Andy Murray returns with a win at Hall of Fame Open: ‘Four kids, marriage and all that stuff later’

Sixteen years after he made his debut at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Andy Murray featured in the main draw again and he notched up an impressive win over Sam Querrey.

Murray last played at the grass-court event in 2006, but the sixth seed had no problems adapting as he dismantled American Querrey 6-2, 6-0 in under an hour.

The world No 52 got off to a poor start as he was broken in the opening game of the match, but hit back immediately and then claimed back-to-back breaks in games six and eight while the second set was one-way traffic.

“It’s obviously amazing to be back here and playing on this court again after 16 years,” the three-time Grand Slam winner said during his on-court interview. “A lot has happened in that time: four kids, married and all that stuff. But I’m happy to be back.”

The former world No 1 added: “It was so breezy and really difficult… but we’re doing the best we can given the conditions.

“Any match that I get to play now I try to make the most of it. I’ve obviously had a lot of issues with injuries the last four or five years. You never know how close you are to the end, but I’m aware I’m getting towards the end of my career so I make the most of every match and every tournament I get to play now.”

Murray will face Max Purcell in the second round after the Australian wildcard defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 1-6, 7-5.

Fellow Briton Liam Broady went down as James Duckworth – the man who Murray beat in the first round at Wimbledon – won 6-2 4-6, 6-2.
