Jannik Sinner looks set to be the top seed at the ATP Finals after opening up a big lead at the top while Novak Djokovic once again finds himself in a dogfight in the Race To Turin.

Reigning world No 1 Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz in the US Open final to win his second Grand Slam title of the year after his success at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year.

With 2,000 points handed to the winner of a major, the Italian has taken his points tally to 9,000 for the 2024 season and he has opened a 2,885-point lead over second-placed Alexander Zverev.

Sinner secured his place in the season-ending tournament in Turin at the beginning of August while Zverev booked his ticked with his run to the quarter-final of the US Open.

Only points accumulated during the current season count towards the ATP Race To Turin with the top seven players in the rankings qualifying automatically.

The eighth spot is reserved for a current Grand Slam champion who is between eighth and 20th in the rankings, but if there is no major champion outside the top seven then the eighth-placed player gets an entry.

Carlos Alcaraz – who won the French Open and Wimbledon this year – is currently third and he only needs a few more points to qualify. The Spaniard is followed by Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur.

Defending ATP Finals champion Novak Djokovic has once again slipped out of the top eight following his third-round exit from the US Open, although he is not too far behind the likes of Fritz, Ruud, Rublev and De Minaur.

The seven-time winner is ninth – one of two alternate spots available – with 3,260 points and all it would require is to win one ATP Masters 1000 tournament to push himself back into the top eight.

Last year the cutoff place for eighth place was 3,460 points while in 2022 the last man in qualified with 2,955 points.

There are only two Masters 1000 tournaments remaining on the calendar with the Shanghai Masters running from October 2-13 while the Paris Masters will take place from October 28-November 3.

Grigor Dimitrov currently occupies the final alternate spot with 2,835 points, but Tommy Paul (2,735), Stefanos Tsitsipas (2,735) and Hubert Hurkacz (2,590) and Frances Tiafoe (2,460) are not too far behind.
