ATP Tour joker had to warn Netflix about off the cuff remarks
American star Frances Tiafoe had to reach an understanding with the filmmakers from Netflix that followed him while making Break Point.
Tiafoe says that the team kept their promise to keep the bulk of his jokes out of the final product.
He said that he didn’t regret anything he told the crew, even if he might have made a misstep or two.
“I probably said some off-the-cuff stuff; everybody probably did. [It was] just me being me. I like to clown around and joke around, but they were pretty good with it. ‘Don’t worry about it’,” Tiafoe told ATPTour.com.
“They just wanted me to be me, so they were never trying to catch me on something. They did a great job. They were there as much and as little as I wanted them to be and I’m happy this opportunity came.
“I was open with them from the beginning. I was like, ‘Look, I’m a jokester. I’m probably going to say some stuff that can’t be on air.’ They were cool with it.
“And you get cool with the guys after a while. They’re with you so much, you get cool with them and then they also start to know and they’re like, ‘Alright, don’t worry about that. I won’t get you there.’ We had some funny car rides at the US Open saying dumb stuff and they knew just to keep it here.”
Tiafoe said that he is keen to see the finished series especially to see how the other players responded to having the cameras around.
“I want to see what they did, how often they had them around,” Tiafoe said.
“For sure, I think this is great for the game, so it’s not just really about me. It’s great for the game, moving the game forward. I’m happy I was part of it and some other guys got a chance to be part of it as well.
“I’m going to watch the whole thing right away. I think that has to be done. I want to see how it turns out. I think everybody does, right?”
Tiafoe said it took some time to settle down with the large crew around but he hopes that he gave fans some authentic insights into what he is really like.
“It was definitely different,” Tiafoe said of the filming experience, “but you want to be as authentic as possible.
“I actually quite enjoyed it, especially that some of the best moments of my life, they were able to get on film. That’s super important to me. I had no problem with it after a while. The beginning stages, maybe it was a little tough.”
