Battle of the Brits could be Jamie and Andy Murray’s final act together in doubles
The Battle of the Brits in Scotland could well be the last time that tennis fans see legendary brothers Jamie and Andy Murray play together in doubles.
The Murray brothers have carried the torch for Scotland and Great Britain in singles and doubles over the past two decades and they were also part of the GB team that won the Davis Cup title in 2015.
Andy has won three Grand Slam singles titles, two Olympic gold singles matches and is a former world No 1 while Jamie has won seven doubles majors – two men’s doubles and five mixed doubles titles – while he topped the ATP Doubles Rankings.
They have not played too many doubles matches together with their last professional encounters coming in 2016 at the Rio Olympics and the Davis Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina.
The duo are set to team up in the doubles at the upcoming Battle of the Brits between Scotland and England at Aberdeen’s P&J Live arena December 21 and 22.
When asked by BBC Radio Scotland if this could be their last event together, Jamie replied: “It’s certainly possible.
“I don’t know what his plans are, really. I guess it depends on how he’s playing, how his body’s feeling.
“It’s not like we get loads of opportunities to do it. That was one big reason for putting the event on in the first place.”
The brothers are in the twilight of their careers as Jamie turns 37 in February and Andy 36 in May.
Jamie has slipped to No 36 in the doubles rankings, winning only one tournament in 2022 while his last Grand Slam title came in the mixed doubles alongside Bethanie Mattek-Sands from the United States at the 2020 Australian Open.
He is set to team up with New Zealander Mark Venus in the new year and he has no plans to retire just yet.
Jamie added: “I still enjoy getting out there, competing against the best players, playing the biggest tournaments.
“As long as I can keep doing that, I want to do it.”
The Battle of the Brits gets underway next Wednesday with Cameron Norrie taking on Jack Draper in the opening match before Andy Murray plays Dan Evans.
Thursday’s afternoon session will see Jamie Murray and Jonny O’Mara will take on Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski in the doubles while Andy faces Draper. The evening session will start with Norrie facing off against Evans before the Murray brothers play against Salisbury and Skupski.
