The rumours have been swirling around former WTA Tour star Camila Giorgi since she walked away from tennis earlier this year, but now some of those myths have been dismissed.

The International Tennis Integrity Unit appeared to break the news of Giorgi’s exit from tennis when she was added to their list of retired players back in May.

That was followed by days of speculation over the reasons for her sudden decision to walk away from tennis.

Giorgi has yet to make any comment on reports circulating in Italy claiming she was forced to flee her home country, but she has now confirmed he has called time on her tennis career with these comments on Instagram.

“Please trust this Instagram for truthful information,” said Giorgi. “To my lovely fans, I am happy to formally announce my retirement from my tennis career. I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years.

“I cherish all the beautiful memories. There have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about exciting opportunities ahead.

“It is a joy to share my life with you, and let’s continue this journey together. With much love, Camila.”

Little has been heard of Giorgi since that statement, but there have been wild rumours about legal proceedings against her in her native Italy.

Now her lawyer Edmondo Tomaselli has dismissed claims that she ‘ran away’ to avoid the authorities, as he offered these comments to Bild.

“Camila Giorgi is in Rome. In recent months she has been away for professional reasons,” he was quoted as saying.

“In short, she has not run away at all, as some have claimed. It’s all just talk, no desire not to be found, just personal commitments.

“Her fans have always followed her through her Instagram page, she has never been unavailable.’

Giorgi has remained active on her Instagram page which has a following of 730k fans, who lap up her glamorous images as she models clothing made by her fashion designer mother.

“Fashion has always been my great passion,” Giorgi said in an interview last year. “I like sports a lot, but I like fashion more. An obsession that has been passed on to me since I was a child.

“There is no need to justify anything, I would like to say; I am dealing with a professional photographer who knows how to do his job. I like everything and it gratifies me.

“My mom always tells me as long as you can show your body take advantage because afterwards you can’t do it!”

We may not see Giorgi on a tennis court any time soon, but we look set to see a lot more of her on Instagram as she moves into a new phase in her life.
