Carla Suarez Navarro’s incredible life story continues as barely a year after beating cancer she has announced that she expecting her first child with her partner Olga Garcia.

The 34-year-old has confirmed on social media that she is three months pregnant with the baby due to arrive in June next year.

“A new stage that we really wanted to live. Let’s grow the family!” she announced in a joint social media post with footballer Garcia. “Excited and happy to face this great moment. Very soon we will be one more 😍❤️”

Suarez Navarro retired from tennis last year with her final match on the Tour coming at the US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York in September while she represented Spain in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November.

She was initially due to retire from tennis at the end of the 2020 season, but her plans were thrown upside down when she started feeling unwell and was forced to miss several tournaments.

The Spaniard, who won two WTA singles titles and reached multiple Grand Slam quarter-finals, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in August and immediately started undergoing chemotherapy.

In April 2021 she confirmed that she was cancer free and ready to return to competitive action, adding that she had pushed her retirement date to the end of the end of the 2021 season.

Suarez Navarro, who reached a career-high of No 6 in the WTA Rankings in 2016, eventually hung up her racket after Spain’s exit from the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

And now she is set for a different journey.

In a statement she added: “We wanted to announce that I am three months pregnant. It’s already 12 weeks of tremendous joy to bring a new life into the world. Both Olga Garcia, my partner, and I feel an enormous responsibility, a great pride for having taken this step, and we were excited to share it with all of you.

“This Tuesday, we went to perform the first trimester ultrasound, to verify that the pregnancy is progressing on the right track. Fortunately, the medical team has confirmed that the gestation process is developing completely normally.

“It is fantastic news for us and fills us with hope for the near future.”
