Carlos Alcaraz has expressed his supreme confidence ahead of his showdown with Novak Djokovic in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Spaniard made the bold assertion that he will give his fans what they want by claiming the gold and told his compatriots to “prepare themselves for the show I’m going to give them.”

The 21-year-old will take on Djokovic at Stade Roland Garros in a blockbuster Olympic final on Sunday as both men will fight to win a maiden gold medal.

Alcaraz is making his Olympic debut in Paris, while Djokovic is competing at his fifth Games as he looks to secure the only significant tennis prize to have eluded him. The duo have both progressed to the gold medal match without dropping a set in their five matches.

This will be the pair’s seventh encounter, with the head-to-head split at 3-3 after Alcaraz won their most recent meeting in dominant fashion in the Wimbledon final last month.

Following his 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals, Alcaraz conveyed his strong belief as he looked ahead to his maiden Olympic final.

“I’m going to try to do the things I’ve been doing, nothing more, nothing less,” said the Spaniard in an interview with Eurosport’s Alex Corretja.

“In the end, it’s a final, it’s a very important moment in my life and my career, and for all Spaniards as well. We’re going to try not to think about how important it is, but to think that it’s just another match.

“Obviously, our goal at the beginning of the week and our goal at the beginning of the year was to get gold, not just a medal, but gold.

“We’ve got the medal guaranteed, so we’re going to try to enjoy this final, because it’s going to be a very nice moment for many people, for my team, for my family, for me in my life, so we’re going to try to go for it.

“They should prepare themselves for the show I’m going to give them (laughs). I don’t know, I just hope they’re cheering me on.

“I’m very grateful to the people in the stadium who have come here to Paris to cheer me on, they are a very important support for me in this tournament.

“I thank the people at home, who are very many Spanish people, for their support. They should be on television, cheering me on at every point, with me. I’m going to give them what they want, which is gold.”

Djokovic will also be competing in an Olympic gold medal match for the first time after having lost in the semi-finals in 2008, 2012 and 2021.

The 37-year-old legend’s previous best result at the Olympics was claiming the bronze medal on his debut at the 2008 Beijing Games.
