Jeremy Chardy talks to Tennis 365 about Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz may look like the complete player, but former ATP Tour star Jeremy Chardy insists the young Spaniard still has plenty of room to improve his game.

Alcaraz has already won four Grand Slam titles by the tender age of 21 and he will join the elite band of players who have won all the major titles in tennis if he adds the Australian Open crown to the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open titles already on his record.

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash told Tennis365 that Alcaraz is the most complete young player he has seen, as he suggested there was not many more areas for him to improve on.

“I hope Carlos continues to enjoy his tennis and doesn’t feel burdened by it all,” Cash told Tennis365 in his role as an ambassador for the Bank of China Hong Kong Open 2025.

“He could look at it and think ‘I’ve done just about everything and I’m getting sick of this’, but you can see he loves it at the moment and it’s amazing that he is such a complete player at this age.

“Alcaraz has got everything. I’ve never seen a young player who has developed all his game at such a young age. There are normally some areas that need improving at that age. Not since Boris Becker came through and won Wimbledon have I seen a player as complete as Alcaraz at such a young age.

“Alcaraz is an incredibly complete. He’s lightening fast, he can play on any surface and at the moment, you would put him in there with Sinner as a favourite for every tournament he enters.

“You look at Roger (Federer) and he needed to fix his backhand when he came through and (Rafael) Nadal needed to work on his volleys. They worked on those things throughout his career, but Alcaraz looked like a complete player at the age of 20.”

Now 2017 French Davis Cup winner Chardy has given an alternative view, as he suggests Alcaraz will be a better player with a couple of years of experience under his belt.

“I can see what Pat would say he looks complete, but I still think Carlos has a lot to improve,” Chardy told Tennis365 at the UTS Grand Final in London.

“He is still playing like a young player still. He is going for everything and he has that energy, but I still feel there is more to come.

“When you see him in a couple of years, you will see a more complete player and that is exciting.

“What he has done already is amazing when you consider his age, but you would not say a player is complete at the age of 21.”

Chardy is expecting Alacarz to continue his development in 2025, as he suggested his rivalry with Jannik Sinner is perfectly timed for tennis.

“We are lucky in tennis to have these two young players in Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner who can bring so much to the sport in the next few years,” he added.

“Sinner has been amazing this year, but it is too early to say they can be compared to the ‘Big 3’.

“It’s still very early in the career for Sinner and Alcaraz so in a few years, maybe we can start to compare.”
