Carlos Alcaraz gets Juan Martin del Potro’s seal of approval – ‘I’m crazy about his game’
Juan Martin del Potro believes tennis will be in good hands once the Big Three have moved on thanks to the emergence of Carlos Alcaraz.
Rising star Alcaraz has been a breath of fresh air since he enjoyed his breakthrough last season as it is not only his brilliant performances that have drawn applause from the tennis community, but also his general demeanour as he always plays the game with a smile on his face.
In terms of his achievements, he won his maiden Grand Slam last year when he lifted the US Open crown and in the process he became the youngest world No 1 at the age of 19. This year he won Grand Slam No 2 when he beat Novak Djokovic in a titanic final at Wimbledon.
While many feared that the sport would suffer once the Big Three of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have all retired, Del Potro believes there is nothing to be worried about with Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner around.
“I’m crazy about his game, about his charisma. I like a lot the way that he moves in the court. And I think he’s making very good things for the sport,” the Argentine told Tennis.com.
“After the Big 3 moves out, the transition is going to be in good hands with Carlitos, with Jannik Sinner also. These guys have the potential to be at the top for the next years.”
2009 US Open winner Del Potro was known for his booming forehand and he was also asked whose forehand on the ATP Tour has impressed him most.
“I don’t know if someone has the hammer now, but I think Carlitos Alcaraz he hits his forehand really strong too,” he added: “He has also a potential to hit better in the future years.”
Alcaraz and Djokovic have served up a treat in recent months as the former won their five-set battle at Wimbledon while the latter won their most recent encounter, an epic three-setter in the Cincinnati Open final.
“First, for the tennis fans, would be great to see them fighting very often,” Del Potro said.
“I think people will get crazy watching them playing finals, as they did in Wimbledon. At the moment, they are the two guys playing tennis in another level.
“You have very good players like Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, many others. But these two players, for me, from my point of view and how I understand the game, they are even better than the rest, for now. I will be watching on TV.”
