Carlos Alcaraz reveals key lesson he has learned after Monte Carlo Masters triumph

Carlos Alcaraz has proclaimed that his ranking is no longer a priority after his victory at the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters saw him return to world No 2.
The four-time Grand Slam champion downed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the final in Monte Carlo, with the Italian hampered by an injury in the closing stages.
Alcaraz‘s maiden Monte Carlo triumph was his sixth Masters 1000 title and 18th career tournament win.
After winning Monte Carlo, Alcaraz has climbed from third to second in the ATP Rankings, leapfrogging Alexander Zverev.
The 21-year-old now sits on 7,720 points, which leaves him 2,210 points adrift of world No 1 Jannik Sinner — who will return from his three-month doping ban at next month’s Italian Open.
The Spaniard won the Rotterdam Open in early February, before reaching the quarter-finals in Doha, the semi-finals in Indian Wells and the second round in Miami. These results ruled out the possibility of Alcaraz catching Sinner before Rome.
Alcaraz has the chance to earn a maximum of 1,500 points across the ATP 500 in Barcelona and the Madrid Masters 1000 before Sinner’s comeback.

In his post-tournament press conference in Monte Carlo, Alcaraz revealed the last couple of months have taught him the value of enjoying tennis rather than thinking about the rankings.
“Talking about the things that I learned the last couple of months… is not thinking about anything else but enjoying on court,” the world No 2 said.
“Something that I realised that I had to do is not thinking about anything else but enjoying.
“So I’m not thinking about the ranking anymore. Just keep going, making the things that I enjoy, that make me happy. It is [stepping] on the court, showing good tennis, and that’s it.
“If I win, it is great. If I don’t win, I will learn and just keep going and making the things that make me happy.
“So the ranking is not my priority anymore, and let’s see what’s gonna happen the next month until Roland Garros. Jannik and I, yeah, probably the people want that in the final. So let’s see.”
Alcaraz will face world No 126 Ethan Quinn in the first round at this week’s Barcelona Open, where he is seeking his third title.
