Carlos Alcaraz issues passionate social media warning to fans after online scam
Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz has been forced to use his Instagram account to warn his fans about a scam setting up fake meetings with the world No 1.
Alcaraz has developed a huge fan base in double quick time after his stunning rise up the tennis rankings reached a boiling point when he beat Novak Djokovic in last month’s Wimbledon final.
His success has boosted his Instagram follower account to almost 4 million, but he has some way to go to match Djokovic’s 13.4 million followers on the platform that he has built up over many years.
Alcaraz has been posting images of his return to the court following his post-Wimbledon break and he also issued a statement to his supporters.
“It has been brought to my attention that there are individuals who are falsely claiming to represent me and offer fans to meet with me if they pay,” stated Alcaraz.
“My team and I are not behind any of this soliciting, nor do I participate in meetings like this! My fans are the best and I am saddened that individuals are trying to take advantage of them.”
Alcaraz was clearly keen to end anyone trying to con his fans out of money for meetings that are never going to happen, with this story the kind of attention superstars need to contend with in the modern world.
Emma Raducanu was the target of online trolls following her 2021 US Open win and it seems that any new star at the top of sport is facing similar battles when they break onto the tennis scene.
Yet Alcaraz will need to get used to all the attention coming his way as former world No 2 Alex Corretja is convinced the Spaniard’s winning run will continue, as he made these comments to Tennis365 at an ASICS event.
“Carlos is special. He is not good, he is special,” Corretja told Tennis365.
“When you are special, you are capable of doing things the others can’t. The way he moves is unbelievable.
“The way he hits the ball is unbelievable. His forehand is just huge, it’s out of this world and the happiness he brings to the game is very unique and difficult for the opponent.
“When you play, sometimes conditions are a little bit chilly, or it is too hot or too windy, but it seems with him, he accepts the situation.
“You need to accept what you have, what you get and what you feel. As soon as you accept that… I’m not sure if life is easier, but more acceptable.
“Novak has said this about accepting disappointment. That is what you have to do on the court.
“Not everything will go for you in a match and you know that. You accept it and make the best of what you have on the day.
“Carlos understands he needs to change his tactics, maybe he won’t go all out. Maybe it is in his character to be very aggressive, but he will learn how to play this way in the fifth.
“This is still the start of the Alcaraz story. Okay, he is winning matches and tournaments at an amazing rate, but there is a lot more to come.”
