Carlos Alcaraz ‘super excited’ as he confirms debut at ATP 250 event
Carlos Alcaraz is on the mend from the leg injury he sustained in training and will make his 2023 debut at the Argentina Open in February.
The world No 1 was forced to withdraw from tennis’ Australian swing and he will miss the season-opening Grand Slam, the Australian Open, after he sustained a muscle injury in his right leg during pre-season training.
However, his recovery has gone well and the Argentina Open, which runs from February 13-19 on the clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club, will be his comeback tournament.
“I wanted to let you guys know that I will be playing the Argentina Open,” he said in a video announcement.
“I’m honestly super excited to travel to Argentina and play there, so I hope to see everyone there. I’ll see you soon.”

However, by the time he travels to Argentina he may well have lost the world No 1 ranking as Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas are all in with a chance of replacing him at the top.
Although it is yet to be confirmed, Alcaraz is likely to travel to Brazil after his visit to Buenos Aires as he is expected to defend Rio Open title from February 20 while he has also signed up for the Mexican Open, an event he missed last year due to injury, from February 27.
“We are very excited to be able to announce three ‘Top 10’ for the moment for such a significant edition of the tournament, all magnificent players,” tournament director Raul Zurutuza said last year.
“Carlos is a young man who will be a benchmark in the sport in the coming years and he showed us in the US Open just like Casper [Ruud] who confirmed himself as a great player, while Stefanos [Tsitsipas] has been constant and already knows the Mexican public well.”
After the Latin American sojourn he will travel to the United States for the Sunshine Double, which features the Miami Open and Indian Wells Open. Last year he became the youngest-ever winner in Miami when he defeated Ruud in the final.
Following his maiden Grand Slam win at the US Open, Alcaraz struggled with injury as he also missed the season-ending ATP Finals and Davis Cup because of an abdominal injury.
