A look at Carlos Alcaraz’s 2023 tennis schedule and his results so far this campaign…
After a brilliant 2022 season during which he won his maiden Grand Slam, the US Open, as well as the ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Madrid, a lot is expected from Alcaraz this year.
However, his campaign got off to a bumpy start as he was forced to pull out of the Australian Open due to a hamstring injury during training. It came not long after he was forced to miss the ATP Finals because of an abdominal injury.
But once he got going, he was hard to stop and has already won six titles so far in 2023, including his second Grand Slam at Wimbledon.
What’s to follow…
After winning Wimbledon, Alcaraz is pencilled in to appear in the revamped Hopman Cup, but it remains to be seen if he will play. After the mixed-team event, he is expected to take a break before heading Stateside for the North American hard-court swing.
Confirmed and unconfirmed events
Hopman Cup – July 19-23
Carlos Alcaraz is set to team up with Rebeka Masarova at the Hopman Cup with Spain set to take on Belgium and Croatia in the group stage in Nice, France.
However, many a Grand Slam champion has pulled out of tournaments in the aftermath of a title run, citing fatigue.
Croatia Open/Hamburg Open – July 24-30
He competed in both the Hamburg Open and Croatia Open in 2022 and finished runner-up to Lorenzo Musetti and Jannik Sinner respectively, but the tournaments take place at the same time this year.
It is highly unlikely that Alcaraz will play in either tournament as his team have indicated that they want him to rest ahead of the North American swing.
Canadian Open – August 7-13
Alcaraz didn’t have the best of lead-ups to the US Open in 2022 as he lost in the second round against Tommy Paul, but given that it is an ATP Masters 1000 event he will probably feature.
Cincinnati Open – August 14-20
Seeded third, the Spaniard exited the hard-court Masters in the quarter-final as he went down in three sets against Cameron Norrie.
It’s another key event in the build-up to the US Open so you can expect his name to be in the main draw, unless of course there are doubts over his fitness.
US Open – August 28-September 10
The tournament brought out the best in the Spaniard as he played three consecutive lung-busting five-setters to reach the final and then defeated Casper Ruud in four sets to claim his maiden Grand Slam. The result also saw him rise to No 1 in the ATP Rankings.
He’ll be back to defend his title if he is fit.
China Open – September 25 – October 1/strong>
With the event returning for the first time since 2019, Alcaraz will make his debut at the China Open this year where 500 ranking points will be on offer.
It will be a strong line-up with Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas also in the main draw.
Shanghai Masters – October 2-9
The only ATP Masters 1000 event in Asia is back on the calendar this year after a three-year absence due to Covid-19 and Alcaraz could make his debut this year.
Last year he played at the Astana Open – losing in the first round – and he could skip that event in order to play in Shanghai.
Swiss Indoors – October 23-29
He reached the semi-final on his debut trip to Basel last year, falling to eventual winner Felix Auger-Aliassime and he could return, although it is quite close to the Paris Masters.
Paris Masters – October 30-November 5
The tournament started well for Alcaraz last year as he won his opening two matches, but he then picked up an abdominal muscle injury during his quarter-final match against Holger Rune and eventually threw in the towel.
The Paris-Bercy event is expected to be on his calendar again.
ATP Finals – November 12-19
After missing the 2022 ATP Finals due to injury, Alcaraz will no doubt be keen to make his debut at the season-ending event in Turin this year.
Although he will first need to win a few tournaments before he can start thinking about the Finals.
Carlos Alcaraz’s 2023 season so far…
Argentina Open
After recovering from injury, Carlos Alcaraz returned with a bang in February as he won ATP 250 Argentina Open on clay, defeating Cameron Norrie 6–3, 7–5 in the final of his debut event of the 2023 season to win the seventh title of his career.
Rio Open
The following week Alcaraz was back in another final and he was the overwhelming favourite to make it back-to-back titles, but Norrie claimed revenge as the Brit secured a 7–5, 4–6, 5–7 victory at the ATP 500 event.
Indian Wells Open
The Spaniard reached the third ATP Masters 1000 final of his career as he brushed aside Jannik Sinner in the semi-final and followed it up with a 6–3, 6–2 victory over Daniil Medvedev in the showpiece match to win his second title of the 2023 season.
Miami Open
Alcaraz was the defending Miami Open champion and he was looking to become one of the few players to win the Sunshine Double following his Indian Wells success.
However, Sinner got his revenge as he defeated Alcaraz in three sets in the semi-final.
Barcelona Open
Alcaraz was the defending champion at ATP 500 event in the Spanish city and he made it back-to-back titles as he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6–3, 6–4 in the final.
Madrid Open
Another successful title defence followed at the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid Open and this time he got the better of the unseeded Jan-Lennard Stuff 6–4, 3–6, 6–3 in the final.
The win saw him secure a 10th ATP Tour singles title while it was also his 21st consecutive match win on Spanish clay.
Italian Open
Alcaraz needed only to appear at the Italian Open to replace Novak Djokovic at the top of the ATP Rankings and earn the top seed for the French Open. It was job done as he won his second-round match, but he was then stunned by world No 135 Fabian Marozsan in the next round.
French Open
Seeded top for a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, Alcaraz was one of the hot favourites to win the title, especially with the great Rafael Nadal absent.
And he looked like the man to beat up until the semi-finals as he ran into Novak Djokovic. The pressure told and he started cramping in late in the second set before falling away badly and Djokovic eventually won 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Queen’s Club Championships
Having played only six grass-court matches before his Queen’s debut, not many expected Alcaraz to go all the way. However, the 20-year-old defeated seventh seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4 in the final to win his maiden title on the surface.
Wimbledon
Having gained the top seed following his Queen’s Club win, Alcaraz produced some solid tennis early on with his win over former runner-up Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round particularly impressive.
He then blitzed Holger Rune in the quarter-final, brushed aside Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final before producing a brilliant display in the final to defeat defending champion Novak Djokovic 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4.
