Stefanos Tsitsipas admits he needs to be more consistent if he wants to win a Grand Slam while he also concedes that the emergence of Carlos Alcaraz has made things a bit more “complicated” when it comes to realising that dream.

The Greek came close to winning his maiden major at the 2021 French Open as he was two sets to love up against Novak Djokovic, but he ultimately lost the final 7–6 (8–6), 6–2, 3–6, 2–6, 4–6.

He reached his second Slam final at the start of this year as he made it to the Australian Open showpiece match, but he once again finished runner-up as Djokovic won in straight sets this time.

Tsitsipas believes he is “really close” to breaking his duck, but he knows he needs a “little bit of luck”.

“It is something that depends on me and a bit on the rest, because the Tour is very big and everyone is looking for that goal,” he told Puntodebreak.com. “At the moment I have not been able to achieve it, I could not win the finals that I played, I lacked that little bit of luck that is always necessary.

“Also this year, after playing in the final in Australia, I had that injury that has prevented me from competing well in upcoming tournaments, so next time I’ll have to level up a lot if I want to win.

“I have to improve my preparation, I know that I am really close, I just have to continue on this same path, giving myself the opportunity to continue fighting until I stand up again in another final. It is a long road to reach that goal, now I am working to be more consistent and return as soon as possible to stand up to an opportunity like this.”

At one point it looked like Tsitsipas would be Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s main rivals for Grand Slam titles, but he has been overtaken by Alcaraz as the Spaniard won the US Open last year at the age of 19.

The Spaniard’s arrival has no doubt made life a bit more difficult for Tsitsipas and the rest of the pack.

The Greek added: “The arrival of Alcaraz makes this goal a bit more difficult than it already is, but I love that the challenges are difficult. Then it tastes better, few things are more satisfying than overcoming a really complicated.”
