Coco Gauff reveals she ‘feels quite comfortable on clay’ after recording her first ever red dirt win
Coco Gauff said she was happy to get her first ever career win on clay under her belt after beating Ons Jabeur in Rome.
The 16-year-old had a meteoric rise last season, bursting onto the scene in 2019 with great runs at Wimbledon and the US Open.
She has had to wait for her first win on the red dirt, though, but she says it’s not something that has surprised her.
“I’m definitely happy to get a win today, especially after a couple of tough losses back in New York,” Coco Gauff told reporters after her 6-4, 6-3 win.
“I haven’t played on clay in over a year, but to be honest, I feel quite comfortable on clay.
“In my junior career, I had quite good results on clay and I go to Patrick Mouratoglou’s tennis academy a lot. I’m quite used to the red clay.
“She’s a tricky player because she definitely changes the ball a little bit.
“I knew it was going to be tough, so to get a win over her on clay was really good.”
Last season’s French Open was her only previous clay result but she fell in the qualifying rounds.
