Former world No 1 Andy Roddick has made a surprising prediction about Coco Gauff’s chances at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.

Gauff arrives at Wimbledon after a 3-6, 3-6 upset loss world No 33 Wang Xinyu in the opening round of the WTA 500 grass-court event in Berlin last week.

That is the only match Gauff has played since defeating world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka to win her maiden French Open title and second Grand Slam overall earlier this month.

The American, who is the No 2 seed at Wimbledon, faces a tricky-looking early draw at The All England Club.

Gauff will open her campaign against world No 42 and former Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska — who prepared for Wimbledon by winning six matches across grass events in Nottingham and Eastbourne.

The 21-year-old could then meet former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka in the second round before a potential third round clash with Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin — who she lost to in the first round at Wimbledon in 2023.

On his Served podcast, Roddick broke down the Wimbledon draw and asserted that he thinks Gauff is set for an early exit, arguing grass is problematic for her game.

“I don’t think Coco makes it to the fourth round,” said the 2003 US Open winner.

Martina Navratilova names her three favourites to win Wimbledon women’s title

How many points will Sabalenka, Gauff, Paolini, Krejcikova, Raducanu drop at Wimbledon?

“It’s weird because we judge people against their own shadows. How much stock do you put in what she did, which was amazing, over the clay-court season?

“Everything about clay benefits her game, it slows it down, more time on the forehand side. Grass is going to be her most challenging surface. It just is.

“The playbook hasn’t changed because she won Roland Garros. She was able to manage the playbook against her with speed on that forehand side.

“Her legs are more of a weapon on the clay; she slides great. The spin profile on her forehand is better on clay.

“She hasn’t won here (Wimbledon) hardly at all. Her best result was when she was like 15? She has not played well on grass at all. The forehand does it no favours.”

Wimbledon is the only major where Gauff is yet to reach the quarter-finals and it is her least successful in terms of win percentage (69%).

The world No 2 holds a 11-5 record across five Wimbledon appearances, and her best result is reaching the fourth round in 2019, 2021 and 2024.
