Daniil Medvedev celebrates ‘a day to remember’ at daughter’s baptism along with godfather Andrey Rublev
Friends Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov cleaned up nicely for the baptism of Medvedev’s daughter Alisa in Monaco recently.
With the ATP Tour stopping in Monte Carlo last week for the ATP Masters 1000 event, the trio didn’t have to travel too far as the ceremony took place in the Principality with the Medvedev family also living there.
Medvedev and his wife Daria became first-time parents in October last year and just over six months after Alisa’s birth, she was baptised.
Besides the happy parents, fellow tennis players Rublev, who is Alisa’s godfather, and Khachanov also attended the ceremony.
Former world No 1 Medvedev took to Instagram to share the joyous occasion, captioning the post: “A day to remember.”
While father Medvedev enjoyed a “day to remember”, it has been a week to remember for godfather Rublev as he won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo on Sunday, defeating Holger Rune in three sets to lift the biggest trophy of his career, and also attended Alisa’s baptism.
Being the godfather of one of his closest tennis friends’ daughter certainly carries some extra responsibilities.
“Now I am responsible for making her believe in God. I also have to pray for her every day, and also make sure that she does not take off her cross, that she grows up as a good and kind person!” Rublev said during an interview with Championat recently.
The 25-year-old also joked: “As a result, the step turned out to be responsible, because the priest made such a speech that I even said: ‘What should Danya do then, since I have to follow this?’ To which the priest said that Daniil must support his family. I asked if it was possible to change, because it looks like I have many times more responsibility than Dani.”
Medvedev will be able to relax with his family at home after last week’s on-court and off-court exertions in Monaco as he pulled out of this week’s Barcelona Open, but there is no rest for Rublev as is due to travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina as he will feature in the ATP 250 Srpska Open in Banja Luka.
The Russian will face either Hugo Gaston or Juan Pablo Varillas in the second round with world No 1 Novak Djokovic also in the draw.
