‘It’s important not to take risks and rush back,’ says Dominic Thiem after injury forces him out of US Open

Dominic Thiem won’t defend his US Open title and will miss the rest of the season after failing to recover from injury.

Thiem is still not 100% after injuring his wrist while contesting the Mallorca Open in June.

In a statement, the 27-year-old Austrian said: “I want to update you on my injury and let you know that unfortunately I have had to withdraw from the US Open and will miss the rest of the 2021 season.

“I am really disappointed not to be able to defend the title in New York, but I haven’t recovered from the wrist injury I suffered at the Mallorca Open.”

He added: “It has been a tough decision but I know this is what I have to do.

“I have a long career ahead of me and it’s important not to take risks and rush back… I want to thank you for all the support that you have given me so far.

“It really means a lot to me and gives me a lot of strength and helps me stay positive in this difficult time. I will use this time where I’m not competing to stay in shape and put more focus on causes I’m very committed to, such as sustainability, especially ocean conservation and nature.”
