Delight for Bianca Andreescu and Canada as she beats Serena Williams in US Open final

Canada has its first Grand Slam singles winner as Bianca Andreescu capped off a dream US Open debut with victory over tennis great Serena Williams in the final.

Her coach Sylvain Bruneau called her a “street fighter” and a “warrior” in the build-up to the match and the teenager did him proud as she beat Williams to win her maiden Grand Slam title.

The 19-year-old simply had too much power for the legendary Williams, but she did show a bout of nerves in the second set before wrapping up the win 6-3, 7-5 to become the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam.

Aged 19 years and 83 days, she also became the 10th youngest female to win a major.

The standard was set when Andreescu broke the Williams serve in the opening game of the match as she came from 15-40 down.

Williams was under the cosh as it took her 10m to hold her serve in game seven, but the very next game she had an opportunity to break back.

But the teenager produced the goods on her serve and then wrapped up the set with a second break in the ninth game.

The second set got underway in the same fashion as the Canadian opened a 2-0 lead with another early break, but Williams managed to peg her back immediately only for Andreescu to get the break back in the very next game.

Suddenly the 19-year-old found herself 5-1 up with her third break and it appeared to be all over.

She came out to serve for the match and had a match point at 40-30, but Williams saved it and found herself with a break point, but a drop shot proved to be the wrong option.

But she had another opportunity and made no mistake this time. Then suddenly her serve started to click and before Andreescu knew what was happening, she was 0-40 down and a swing down the line went out and it was back on serve.

The crowd on Arthur Ashe went berserk and Andreescu’s hands were on her head.

The tide had truly turned as 5-1 became 5-5, yet 23 minutes later Andreescu had two more Championship points, but Williams came up with an ace to save one of them.

However, the youngster was not to be denied on her third match point as she wrote her name into history by handing Canada its first Grand Slam singles title.

For Williams, it is another opportunity lost as she is now 0-4 since in major finals since giving birth while the wait for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam continues.
