Roger Federer is celebrating his 40th birthday and the tennis world has united to toast one of the greatest players of all-time.

Rivalries have been put aside as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have joined those sending messages to Federer, with the current world No.1 suggesting he has been honoured to share a court with the 20-time Grand Slam legend.

“Happy 40th birthday,” declared a smiling Djokovic. “You keep inspiring all of us. It has been a huge honour to share the tennis court with you for the last 15 years and hopefully you can keep on playing.Β The sport needs you.

“I wish you health, love and happiness with your close ones. Thanks for everything.”

Rafael Nadal’s academy also sent a message to Federer on Twitter, along with tennis legend Rod Laver.

Now the tennis world is waiting to see whether we will see Federer playing at the highest level of the game at the age of 40, as he has yet to confirm his future plans after losing in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon.

He has pulled out of the upcoming Masters 1000 events due to an injury, casting doubt over his participation in the US Open and sparking fresh discussion over his potential retirement from tennis.
